Most Indonesians and foreigners may only know Sumatera's "Tenun Songket" (the Songket case). In fact, there was a very famous cloth called Buya Sabe or Sarung Donggala (woven donggala cloth) in Donggala, in the center of Sulawesi. This is not only in the traditional process, but there is also a modern version that has been specially commissioned. Unfortunately it can only be ordered in Java.
Donggalas fabrics are not only known as traditional handicrafts for women in Donggala, but they are characteristic of Donggala, which contains the value of art and culture. In Donggang City, Donggala, Donggala's cloth has become the mother's routine in the Towale Village in the Banawa District of Donggala.
This activity has become the main activity of young women for middle-aged mothers. It's not surprising that every home has at least one traditional loom. There is even a house that has as much equipment as three units. For the craftsmen from Donggala to Towale, they said they had been woven by their parents for generations.
The production of fabrics from Donggala is almost the same as the production of textiles in other areas. Both when dyeing the thread and when weaving. Interestingly, the craftsmen of Donggala in the village Towale have reached the number of 300 people.
The production of donggala fabrics depends on the pattern of the fabric. There are six types of manufacturing techniques and fabric patterns in Donggala. There are fabrics from Palekat Garusu, Buya Bomba, Buya Sabe, a combination of Bomba and Sube. For these reasons, the Buya Bomba motif is the hardest to achieve. The process takes one to two months, differs from the other models and only takes one to two weeks.
"For the Buya Bomba, we do it carefully because we want to produce a lot of samples, which usually takes a maximum of two weeks," said Dayama, one of the hand-crafted materials.
The uniqueness and the interesting features become one of the purchase calls. No wonder, the Donggala fabric is of great interest to people across the country
The Donggala government preserves the donggala material and collects all traditional craftsmen in Donggala. Even for the management and maintenance of donggala fabrics, the government of Donggala has issued local regulations in this regard.
"These regulations are designed to preserve the durability of Donggaga's woven fabric and can not be reproduced by others, in other words, it's a patent from Donggala," says Habir Ponulele, Regent of Donggala.
In the regency of Donggala, Donggala's traditional weaving crafts are spread across three districts, Banawa District, Tavaili District, and the West Coast.
